Planning around long weekends

If Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are days off for you, the calendar can help identify a longer break. It does not establish anyone’s work schedule, leave entitlement or holiday pay. An uncertain festival date should not be treated as fixed when booking travel.

The long-weekend view groups adjacent weekends and confirmed holidays. It does not add a day off for a Saturday holiday. Check the underlying dates and your own arrangements before making a plan.

Why some following Mondays appear

The August 2026 amendment to the Public Holidays Act provides for a following-day holiday when a listed observance falls on a Sunday. Applying that rule to Divali on 8 November gives Monday 9 November 2026. That additional date is distinguished from the earlier May notice in this guide.

For 2027, Monday 6 September is expressly included in the Cabinet announcement after Ganesh Chaturthi on Sunday 5 September. Consult the year-specific sources rather than copying dates from a previous year.

Visiting on a public holiday

A national holiday does not tell you whether a particular restaurant, beach service, attraction or transport route is operating. Check the places and journeys that your day depends on. Confirm the meeting instructions and return arrangements for any booked activity.

A festival can be part of a rewarding cultural visit, but the holiday date is not an invitation to a private ceremony. Look for a confirmed public event and follow the host’s visiting and photography guidance.

School breaks are a separate calendar

The Ministry of Education’s 2026 calendar covers primary and secondary terms. The school-holidays guide sets out those dates, admission and resumption arrangements, and the gaps between terms. Schools following a different calendar may have different breaks.

The 2027 school dates have not been verified for this guide. They are not inferred from 2026 or from the national holiday list.

Your planning checklist

  • Check the year and any date-status note.
  • Confirm the transport and opening arrangements your day depends on.
  • Use the school’s own calendar where it differs.

A few useful answers

Is Eid-Ul-Fitr fixed in this calendar?

The official announcements mark its date as subject to moon-sighting confirmation. That qualification is retained here and in calendar downloads.

Are school holidays the same as public holidays?

No. Public holidays are national observances. School terms, breaks, admission days and school-specific arrangements need their own calendar.

Does a holiday on Saturday automatically make Monday a holiday?

The Sunday provision cited here does not create that rule for Saturdays. Use the dates explicitly listed or supported by the applicable official source.
