Choose your market around what you want to see and the day you can go. A fixed food market, a weekly fair and a craft market serve different purposes. A focused visit near the rest of your day is easier to enjoy than crossing the island to collect several markets.

Choose food shopping, a fair or crafts

Port Louis is a useful starting point if you want to combine a market with a city walk. Central Flacq gives an eastern itinerary a food-market or fair stop. For craft shopping in the capital, Caudan has a separate market within the waterfront complex.

The days below are drawn from the council and operator pages checked on 9 October 2026. They describe the published schedules, not a promise that every stall will be open throughout those hours. Check exceptional holiday arrangements close to your visit.

Schedules come from Flacq District Council and Caudan. Individual stalls and exceptional closures may differ.

Distinguish Central Flacq’s fixed market from its fair

Flacq District Council lists the fixed market as daily. Central Flacq’s produce and general-goods fair runs on Wednesdays and Sundays. The council separately lists Lallmatie’s fair on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The council gives market and fair operating hours of 06:00 to 18:00, shortened to 06:00 to noon on public holidays. These are site operating hours; individual traders may finish earlier. If the weekly fair is your reason for travelling, use its specific day rather than the fixed market’s daily schedule.

Pair the Central Market with a city morning

In Port Louis, make the Central Market one stop within a wider morning rather than rushing through it between several cross-island journeys. Leave time to look at what is for sale and to stop for food if you find something you want to try.

If you prefer an introduction with a guide, Andeor offers a heritage and street-food walk through its local partner. The published route includes the Central Market. Use its booking page for the current programme and departures, and keep a self-guided shopping visit separate from what a paid tour includes.

Use Caudan for a separate craft-shopping stop

Caudan’s Craft Market advertises textiles, woodwork, jewellery and model ships. Its published hours are 09:30 to 18:00 from Monday to Saturday, and 09:30 to 14:00 on Sundays and public holidays. Check the operator’s notice if your visit depends on a particular stall.

Ask who made an item and where it was produced if that matters to your purchase. Compare materials, workmanship and the price before deciding. A market location alone does not establish an item’s origin.

Take time over prices, food and photographs

Carry a shopping bag and enough Mauritian rupees for the purchases you plan. Ask the price and quantity before accepting an item, particularly where produce is sold by weight or in a bundle. Keep your spending within the amount you set for the visit.

When buying something to eat, ask what it contains if you have an allergy or dietary requirement. A familiar name is not a guarantee that every stall uses the same ingredients. Choose a stop where you are comfortable with the preparation you can see.

Ask before taking a close photograph of a trader or their work. Give shoppers room to pass, and finish a conversation before pointing a camera into the stall.

Fit one market into the day you already want

For Port Louis, combine shopping with Aapravasi Ghat on a day when it is open, or return to Caudan for a break. From an eastern base, a Central Flacq stop can be the main outing for a relaxed morning. These are editorial suggestions, not timed transport schedules.

Check the return journey before making bulky purchases. If you buy food or plant products to take home, consult your destination’s customs rules before travelling with them.
