In this guide
Start with the journeys you actually need. An airport arrival, a day in Port Louis and an early boat departure can call for different arrangements. Compare transport around your accommodation address, the return journey and any fixed meeting time, rather than choosing one method for the whole holiday.
Choose transport by the journey
For an arrival with luggage, arrange the pickup around your flight and the exact accommodation address. For several scattered stops, a rental car or a quoted driver itinerary may be practical. For a city visit along the Metro Express route, rail and a short onward walk or connection may suit you.
For a fixed activity departure, begin with the confirmed meeting instructions and work backwards. The name of a town or beach is not a pickup point. Leave room for the journey, parking or the walk from a stop, without treating a map estimate as a guaranteed arrival time.
A rental car for independent days
The official tourism guide lists car rental as one way to explore and notes that driving is on the left. Before booking, confirm the licence requirements, insurance, excess, deposit and permitted drivers with the rental company.
Check delivery and return arrangements, parking at your accommodation, fuel policy and what to do after a breakdown. A lower headline price is not enough to compare two rental offers.
A driver for a considered day route
A private driver can let you focus on the outing. Agree the places, pickup time, waiting arrangements and return point, and ask what the quote includes.
Distinguish transport from a guided visit. A car and driver do not establish that attraction admission, specialist guiding, meals or equipment are included. Confirm those separately.
Taxis for individual journeys
Mauritius Now recommends agreeing a taxi fare before starting the journey. For an early departure or an evening return, make the arrangement in advance rather than relying on finding a car later.
Ask for the exact meeting point and how to contact the driver. Confirm the number of travellers, luggage space and any child restraint requirement when requesting the quote.
Buses when the route fits your day
Buses connect places beyond the Metro Express corridor. A useful bus plan needs both the outward route and the return service. Check the destination displayed, the stop you need, whether a connection is involved and the latest return you are comfortable relying on.
Avoid applying one set of operating hours to every route. A town service, a rural connection and a journey on a holiday can have different arrangements. For a remote beach or trail, work out the final distance from the stop before making the bus your plan.
Metro Express for the central corridor
Metro Express connects Port Louis with towns on the central corridor towards Curepipe. The operator describes connections with bus stations along the route. Use its current journey information to choose the station and any onward connection; the rail network is not a direct service to every coastal resort.
The operator lists adult MECard and single-use tickets at station ticket machines. Check the current ticket and fare conditions before travelling. Keep the return station, last service and the walk to your final destination in your plan, especially after an evening meal.
Plan from the accommodation address
Group nearby interests rather than crossing the island repeatedly. Directions in My trip open your chosen place sequence in Google Maps; they are a route to review, not a reserved transfer or a travel-time promise.
Leave room for traffic, stops and the arrival instructions at each destination. If a day relies on a boat or guided departure, arrange transport around that confirmed meeting point.
Check holiday and return arrangements
A public holiday is a reason to check the journey, not to assume that transport stops. Use the holiday calendar alongside the operator’s current information. For a taxi or private driver, agree the return arrangement and contact method before you leave.
Keep the accommodation address and the essential booking details available without a mobile connection. If your group separates during the day, agree where to meet and how everyone gets back. The simplest arrangement is the one each traveller can explain.
Your planning checklist
- Agree the total cost and what it includes.
- Confirm pickup and return meeting points.
- Check luggage and child-seat arrangements.
- Save contact details and the accommodation address offline.
A few useful answers
Do I need a rental car for the whole holiday?
Not necessarily. Choose around your accommodation and planned journeys. A mix of prearranged transfers, a driver for one outing and suitable public transport can be more useful than forcing every day into the same arrangement.
Does Metro Express serve every beach area?
No. It serves the central urban corridor. Check the actual stations and the onward journey before treating rail as a route to a coastal stay.
Should I rely on a generic bus timetable?
Use information for the specific route and date, including the return. General island-wide operating-hour estimates do not establish the last service on your journey.
