Tipping in Mauritius without guessing a compulsory percentage
A practical approach to tips, service charges and small cash in Mauritius, without inventing a mandatory island-wide rate.

A tip is a personal decision about service, not an extra amount to invent before every transaction. Start with the agreed price and the bill. Avoid treating an online percentage as a compulsory rule for every restaurant, driver, hotel or excursion.
Read the bill first
Check whether the bill already includes a service charge and ask what an unclear line means. A service charge and a voluntary gratuity are different. If you wish to leave something extra, choose an amount that fits your budget and experience. Do not assume that a charge automatically reaches a particular member of staff.
Make the gesture straightforward
Small rupee notes are practical when you want to thank a guide, driver or member of a team. Establish whether a shared tip is appropriate rather than promising each person an amount you did not budget for. For card payments, ask whether a gratuity can be added and how it is handled. Never send money to an unfamiliar personal QR code simply because someone says that is the only way to tip.
Keep it separate from your booking
Pay the agreed excursion balance through the confirmed channel. A tip should not replace a balance, secure an unconfirmed place or be presented as a requirement for normal service. If an unexpected compulsory payment is requested, clarify it with the booking contact before paying. Our currency guide helps with notes and exchange choices, while the QR guide explains local payment apps.
Should I bring euros or pounds for tips?
Rupees avoid asking the recipient to exchange a small foreign amount. Change money for your own spending needs rather than carrying a fixed tipping envelope for everyone.
