Use Mauritian rupees, abbreviated MUR or Rs, as your everyday reference. Bring a suitable payment card and keep some rupee cash for small purchases. Neither a foreign banknote nor a payment-app logo guarantees that a particular business can accept your payment.

Where to get rupees

The airport lists currency-exchange and ATM facilities, so you can organise initial spending money after arrival. Banks and licensed exchange businesses offer other options during your stay. Compare the rupees you will actually receive for the same amount, after commission or fees. A conveniently placed counter can be sensible for a modest first exchange; there is no permanently cheapest airport, bank or town. Check opening hours before making a special journey. Keep the receipt and count the notes before leaving.

How to read a rate

If you hand over euros or pounds, the exchange business is buying your foreign notes. Look at its relevant cash-buying quote, not a transfer rate or the rate for selling you foreign currency. The Bank of Mauritius reference describes average indicative retail rates. It is a comparison point, not a guaranteed offer. For an ATM, consider both the machine's disclosed charge and your own bank's withdrawal and exchange fees.

Cards, cash and conversion choices

Visa and Mastercard are commonly accepted, but acceptance varies by business and terminal. Ask before a meal, taxi ride or purchase. If offered a choice between MUR and your home currency, compare the conversion terms. Choosing MUR leaves conversion to your card arrangement; accepting the terminal's conversion uses that offer. Neither removes every possible bank fee. Visa explains the choice. Carry a second payment method separately and keep smaller notes for modest purchases.

What about euros, dollars and Juice?

A merchant may quote or accept foreign currency by agreement, but do not assume that euros or dollars work everywhere or that change will be returned in that currency. Agree the currency and final amount first. Juice and MauCAS QR payments depend on compatible accounts and apps. Our guide to QR payments explains why simply downloading an app is not enough. For excursions, check the currency and payment instructions on the actual booking rather than treating an exchange-rate estimate as the amount due.

Should I exchange the whole holiday budget on arrival?

There is no universal amount. Cover your first cash expenses, keep secure backups and compare later options without making your holiday revolve around small rate differences.
